His plays, especially The Seagull, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard, have been staged in many theaters around the world for over a hundred years. The story “The Darling” reflected Chekhov’s life impressions and memories associated with his stay in Taganrog, Moscow and Yalta, it reproduced real signs of the time. The image of the main character caused an ambiguous reaction among Chekhov's contemporaries, although in general, “The Darling” was warmly received by the literary community of Russia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
